2003 Season - Week 21

Superbowl XXXVIII

In one of the best Superbowls ever Adam Vinatieri goes from goat to hero, Tom Brady is the MVP and The Patriots win their 2nd Lombardi trophy in 3 years. But why did Carolina rush their final drive and leave The Pat’s over a minute to make the game winning drive? That said, 15 wins on the trot, the 2nd longest run ever… and still counting. Congratulations NE. BUMSBowl VIII The Chief staged a great comeback to prevent Wayne from doing the double. Down 27-12 with just 12 minutes left in the game Chief tied it up when Jake Delhomme hit Ricky Proehl with just 1 minute 8 seconds remaining. In the closest BUMSBowl yet it finished 33-33 and Chief won on the momentum rule because Delhomme was the last player to score that played for only one team. Both owners had Adam Vinatieri. Supergames After Jake Delhomme put Chief level he then sat back and watched Tom Brady get Adam Vinatieri in field goal range and with 4 seconds left Vinatieri finally scored a field goal and Chief passed David S to win £9 for the highest scoring BUMS team. Johnny was spot on with the half time score and Aaron was closest with the full time score. Stampy did win the Quarterly prediction, getting all 4 right. Each won £9 while it was perhaps fitting that the correct first scorer predictors (H, Cheryl & Marcus) only got £3 each - we had to wait 20 minutes until Vinatieri finally made a kick, on his third attempt. See attached for the results. ALL-BUMS 2003 Priest Holmes was clearly the most popular player in the league and is the starting Running Back for the third consecutive year. This year he polled 37 out of a maximum 48 points (77% of the points available). Last year he polled 41 of 48 points (86%). He is joined in the backfield by first-timer Ahman Green. Brett Favre is the starting QB for the 2nd time but you have to go back to the inaugural BUMS team of 1995 to find his last start. He was a backup in 1997 & 2001. Randy Moss starts at wide-out for an All-BUMS record 4th time. He polled most receiver votes in 1998, 2000 & 2003 and was second in 1999. Tim Brown holds the record with 5 appearances in the team (1997, ‘99, 2000, ‘01 & ‘02). Mr Perfect Mike Vanderjagt proved to be no idiot kicker as he out polled the season points record holder Jeff Wilkins for the starting job and the Superbowl coaches got the nod to coach the Allstars although this time John Fox got the better of Bill Belichick. Full team attached. BUMS on Seats The Superbowl may be over but there is one last gathering scheduled for next Monday at 6:30pm as we meet at BUMS HQ to see the AFC take on the NFC in the Pro-Bowl.
